The Good, Bad & Ugly @ the Holidays

With the holidays coming up, it can be an exciting time coming up, but also stressful.  There are travel arrangements, what you're cooking, if you're hosting or bringing stuff, and gifts to possibly bring with you.

Often, we are happy and excited to see people we don't normally get to see unless it's a family or other type of gathering.  Other times, it's stressful because there is that one (or more) person(s) that you really do not care to deal with for whatever your good reason is.  If you're lucky, you're in town and can create an escape plan.  Other times we are stuck for a few days out of town or sharing a space with those who cause stress.

In case you need to create that buffer because you can't exactly leave, I suggest that you have a tablet or laptop to bring with that can go online so you can read my good friend Soldwolf's novel in the making, called Meeting the Parents (ch 1) - a Military Science Fiction story in the making.  The futuristic setting is a United Earth, with intergalactic allies and foes, cultural nuances and keeping peace among the planets.  The action is solid, relationships forged and established, and the characters endearing.  Aside from the daily paper, this can be your Morning Revelations (ch 7) and get to know what happens Later That Day (ch 9) in one sitting.  If you're missing your Grandmother (ch 11), maybe you can connect with this one, who has a big enough heart to accept her granddaughter's new guy right off the bat.

Sometimes it's nice to be able to have family Meetings & Arrivals (ch 31) but then again, it's a stress reliever to make your Goodbyes & Travels (ch 21)

Maybe you're more interested in what happens strategically, at SSQH (ch 14) or more action pact like Takedowns (ch 41).  If you're more into detective work, you'll like Explorations & Discoveries (ch 44) or executive moves like Discoveries & Decisions (ch 45).

For those of you with toxic people in your lives where you've had to walk away, and miss the hustle and bustle, I feel you.  Maybe reading this will help take up some of that time to feel less lonely.  As for me, I'm taking strays for the big dinners and growing my chosen family.  Enjoy the read, the more clicks that happen, the better chance he has of being found by publishers to get a real book deal!

Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet, Gimme Some Snowballs to Throw!

It snowed on Halloween... That was too early! Now it's snowing again, and it's not Thanksgiving yet. While yes, it happens. This is Wisconsin, it can snow in summer. I'm just not ready for this yet. It's not like I'm 12, and ready to take a big scoop of snow in my hot bare hands, pack it tight and throw it as hard as I can... Plus, I'm the catcher, not the pitcher, and I'm not getting any younger. As much as a good round of fun throwing frozen objects at other people sounds, I'm ready for a nice fireplace listening to the logs crack with some good things to read.

If you ask me, people who don’t read aren’t very interesting. Whether you’re a lifetime student, teach preschool, read for fun, read to learn, write (therefore you read something), reading makes you more interesting to talk to. Can’t think of anything? Check out my friend Soldwolf’s story called Meeting the Parents (ch 1) and enjoy scenes from the Backyard (ch 10) and eat up the food from the BBQ Pit (ch 13). No, it’s not just a lighthearted thing, it’s a military sci-fi packed with action, relationships, and intergalactic politics, so whether you like learning about Cultural Differences (ch 16), what all goes down in making Plans & Tours (ch 37) or the actions like Opening Moves (ch 43).

Here is the new chapter, Opening Salvos (ch 48): The news is broke - a lot of people are severely busted for war crimes. All systems are on go, to find the scandals. Will justice be served? There are repairs to be done. Will they get there in time, or will someone arrive too early or too late & raise a scene? Sometimes a tactical explanation on how things work is nice... With various teams working together, and the best of them on the same one, things ought to work out... Tactics. It's all about the tactics, understanding what works best, good instinct, and knowing the situation. Those who are being sought do not have good things coming. You just have to read this chapter, because the military action in this section is big-screen movie worthy!

Of course, sometimes it's good to take a break from reading on occasion. Here is a fun game to play on Facebook - Hero Wars. It’s a fun RPG slide game, hosted through Facebook, where there are several fun activities to do daily, with your own team of character heroes, titans, dungeons, towers, and more... A fun diversion for sure, in between reading.

A book I liked reading when I was young was IQ84 by 村上 春樹 Murakami Haruki - a fantasy novel filled with mystery and self discovery of a girl with a learning disability who ends up being an unlikely hero in a dangerous world, which began as a taxi ride that led to a suggestion made by the driver that took her on this humongous adventure... You may just end up loving her side-kick, too. Maybe I need to read it again, with my childhood favorite treat, fresh tangerine/Mandarine oranges, and hot chocolate... Better yet, make it a mocha!

Music, Music & More Music, and Read!

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting two people from the German college band called Aka Blas.  It is located in Braunschweig, Germany, and let me tell you, such talent and fun music they played for us!  It's kind of like unplugging the Trans Siberian Orchestra.  It was fun taking them around, showing off Racine.  They played at UW-Parkside, and I hope they come back someday again.

This is Louis and Helen, a drummer and clarinetist, and the fun part is that my husband Mike and I are also, a drummer and clarinetist also!  It's fun to get together with other musicians.

I was also able to get a spot in the UW-Parkside Community Band, where I'd played way back when.  After 15 years of not playing, I am happier than a clam to get to play 4 concerts a year with my Alma Mater's community group.  Here I am, at my 1st rehearsal.  Please check the website for the concert schedule.

To make it even better, pretty soon, I will be subbing for a part with the Racine Concert Band (our very own semiprofessional classical group).  The concerts are:
Tuesday, October 15, 2019, @ 7 pm @ Washington Park High School in Racine
Tuesday, February 25, 2019, @ 7pm @ Horlick High School in Racine
Thursday, May 21, 2019, @ 7 pm @ Case High School in Racine

I'm reading a story that a good friend of mine, Soldwolf is writing, called Meeting the Parents, a work on this story in progress, which will hopefully get published. It’s a military sci-fi, with a lot of workings of a futuristic space Navy and a lot of interspecies relationships, not just intimately but as different humanoids learning each other’s customs and culture. You'll enjoy the references to American culture such as building a BBQ Pit (ch 13), an alien species called the Tamalni's custom of an engaged couple's 1st Night Out (ch 17), the Plans & Tours (ch 37) of tactical moves, and the most recent chapter (47), 2nd Moves - The reports are in. I think they're top secret, but the mission is also top priority. Sometimes it takes an irregularly timed, classified message is what it takes to get the attention of necessary people to look at the red flags. Oh, the intel they collected and action plans put in place!!! Will they make it on time? If so, will they succeed? Read on and find out...

Please read... Once the story is finished, with enough views, the powers to be might pick up the book to have a professional editor go into it and get put out into an actual book! Just remember to keep supporting the arts. They are what makes cultural people interesting!

Music, Cultural Exchanges, & More!

After not playing for several years, I was finally able to play with the UW-Parkside Reunion band.  I'm hoping to be able to keep playing again, this fall in the Parkside Community Band, as well as get on the substitute list for the Racine Municipal Band.  It's fun.  Here is me, at the event:

In participating in the reunion event for the Parkside 50th anniversary, I was able to get on a list to host a couple of members of a German municipal band, which is actually a community-based band.  They will be here September 14th - 16th.  I'm looking forward to it, and hope people will come to the event.

Not only will I be hosting them, I'll be helping to pick them up, take them to their appointments here (which includes a concert), and back to where they need to go to depart to the next stop on their tour.  It will be a nice lesson in cultural exchanges for my son & husband, also.

Speaking of Lessons (chapter 46) - In chapter 46, Lessons, in my friend, Soldwolf’s story, Meeting the Parents, it’s more than pizza, for those who aren't used to "Earthling" food... Maybe it's the cheese, and they should visit Wisconsin? But wait... tactical issues need to be discussed, and lessons need to be reviewed... More training on tactical issues is also in order. The hero's lovely is sweet, yet, she knows how to keep him in line while keeping their best interests in mind.

Speaking of homemade pizza, my son did a good job not long ago on his. I also miss cooking with him when he was little... To be able to have good family relationships... Well, I guess I'll just have to live vicariously, this way.

Be dears and read it, okay? Don’t worry about Big Brother, because I’ll be the one to give you the Big Sister Interrogation (Ch 3). But the best type of A Mother’s Gift (Ch 20) I can give to my son is to keep pursuing my options to set the example. Maybe I just need some Celebrations (Ch 32) to lighten up the mood? And if you don’t comply, we’ll haul you to Zrik'hlfa, the capital of Tamal (the planet that the hero's lovely is from), for some major Takedowns (Ch 40). For now, I have some major Discoveries and Decisions (Ch 45) to make for myself... Kind of like how April showers bring May flowers. What do May Flowers bring? Pilgrims... I wonder what kind of pilgrimage I ought to go on?

Sometimes, personal touches can help move professional connections forward. Read on to read all of the details! I guaranty you, more than heads will be rolling here, and maybe some people will be turned into sausage! I just hope it doesn't end up on the pizza... With enough readership, the publishers on DeviantArt may pick up the story to publish it into a real book, which I'm hoping will happen!

I'm also a co-administrator for a support group, and the founder of this Sibling Abuse Survivors is on a Blogtalk Radio show.  Please have a listen, HERE - Thank you!

Things to do... What do you like?

I was finally able to go to a Racine Raiders football game as a regular fan...  The last game was over 30 years ago, when I was still in my high school pep band and the Lighthouse Brigade Marching Band and went to play as part of one of those...   I remember I used to have so much fun because watching the games in person is more fun than watching on TV.  I've had the pleasure of going to every home game in high school, went to watch the Wisconsin Badgers regularly while in college, and even went to a Green Bay Packers preseason game once.  So, to be able to take my son to one of these, since I'd pulled him from regular public school to do the public virtual school thing, he never had that opportunity...  It's a great family event as well as for groups of friends to attend.  I had fun making some noise with my miniature cowbell that sounds more like a wind chime...

I enjoy instilling the love of reading in young people. Teens & young adults who don't fit the social norms or haven't been introduced to much would like something a little different, such as Soldwolf’s current story in the making, Meeting the Parents (Ch. 1) In this military sci-fi story, there is a lot of action, tactical movements both from a personal & strategic perspective, and the main couple along with their Circle of Friends (Ch 36) are endearing. In Discoveries & Decisions (Ch 45), the details of the discoveries from the last chapter(s) are gradually being revealed. Certain conclusions can be drawn from these, as well as understanding the gravity of the key players' impact was on finding the intel. Some might be nominated for awards, others might be glad that they don't use guillotines in the future... A ton of info is sifted through, and this operation was bigger than anything you'd expect, so the plans on what to do next will have to be a delicate balance.

In the chapters leading up to the current point, the “bad guys” whether they are outright enemies, infiltrators, or inside traitors, The Wrath of Khan will look tame to what they are going to end up getting. Whether you’re about the military aspect, sci-fi action or personal relationships, you’ll find this to be a good read. Even though Spock says, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” (Star Trek), I think, in this case, the need to keep this couple safe from harm would be best for this futuristic society.

Go find that thing to do, you might find something you enjoy, and be inspired to pursue something new, get a hobby or just expand on what you already have.

Run 4 Beer 5k

The Racine Brewing Run for Beer event was today.  For me, it was a huge accomplishment to finish this.  Had you asked me 5 years ago to take part in a 5k anything, I'd have told you No. Effing. Way. In. Hell.  Even 3 years ago, I'd have needed my walking/hiking sticks to make it.

But since 5 years ago, I'd lost a lot of weight, and being on a quest to be more active, I decided to try.  I figure hey, if I can start reading a book called Meeting the Parents that is still in progress of being written (which is actually kind of neat, since it's like I get to watch the wheels turn in the author's head), I figure I can do my own Explorations & Discoveries (Ch44) on my own skills...  It was fun to make my own "bib", instead of numbers, we came up with a name for a beer, if we were to have made our own craft beer.

In the chapter, there are "new" old places to explore...  Intel to discover.  Testing skills of an Ensign stepping foot into field service.  Sometimes, having fun while getting dirty is the best medicine, and it's good to know that my grandma's advice about always being an explorer and trying new things still holds true in the future!  Some of the reminiscings give clues about who the hero and his buddies are as people.  You'll have to come read for the juicy details...  There is a lot of tactical detail happening.  Soldwolf has a knack for making these procedures exciting.

As for me, well, I probably SHOULD have used my walking sticks...  But, they DO donate proceeds to 2 charities each year when they host these 5k walk/run series around the state.

I did get a craft beer after the race, as well as a pretzel, a T-shirt, and some swag...  After losing 2# since this morning, due to sweating out whatever toxins, and hoping the hops from the beer will help kick out any other toxins, I took a nap and now I'm ready for Italian Fest with my son.

Summer Things To Do

It's summer, and of course, I'd love to go to an outdoor swimming pool or the beach.  I always love my water sources...  But then again, The Ren Faire is also going on, and then there are the books/stories that call my name...  And, I heard that GenCon is attracting Star Trek characters this year, and I'd love to go to that too.  It would be neat if I could find someone to go...

Speaking of these types of conventions, I think it would be cool if Soldwolf’s story could end up being published into an actual, real book... The name of the story is Meeting the Parents (Ch 1) is a military sci-fi work in progress. With enough interest and hits on the chapters, especially after it’s all wrapped up, it could get picked up by a publisher who will get a professional editor to look at it and put it forth into something you can hold in your hand and read... This has the potential to be featured at a Comic or Science Fiction Convention, with characters dressed up... I wonder if he’d let me be one of those? Maybe Miyo, the Japanese lady with the bionic arm who loves to gift people, except I don’t think I look Asian enough, nor am I a bionic woman... Or maybe Quen’tra the cute bunny-eared love interest of the hero, who is gentle, sensitive, and in her own way, bad-ass.

I assure you that you don't want to miss The Morning Edition (Ch2) because who knows what kind of Morning Revelations (Ch 7) you will get... Maybe it's to build that BBQ Pit (Ch 13) or to find out what is going on at the SSQH (Ch 14)? Just don't forget to keep your family and friends in the loop when it comes to Plans & Tours (Ch 37). Please take a look, you'll find this to be interesting.

!!!!MOVE!!!!

I'm having a hectic period of time, moving from a house we were renting, into a house I just bought.  I have a lot less help and also not as young as I used to be, and it's taking a toll, but it will be worth it, once we're settled in.  There is a lot to reduce since the space we have is smaller, but easier to maintain.

In conjunction with moving, I'd like to tie in the newest development in my friend Soldwolf's story, Meeting the Parents.  It's a military sci-fi novel, which automatically means it's action-packed, and the characters are so endearing, I'm getting attached.  The interpersonal relationships range from interplanetary alliances & enemies, interspecies romance, and of course, the humor that goes into it all.  It's very intellectually written.  In this chapter (43), Opening Moves, an important meeting of military minds is happening, while the romantic couple is also on the lookout for a new house to call home.  The info that the hero's sister found out, $&it is getting ready to roll downhill, and a lot of strategizing is going on!  Is there a traitor or pirate lurking for the hero's betrothed's home planet?  Yikes! Big things are brewing for sure!

Independence & Foundation Day

Wishing all of my American friends a happy 4th of July, especially to those who are in the service, served, and veteran status!  Love you all!  I really do appreciate your service.

In this country, we like to celebrate our freedoms.  Whether it's to celebrate all of them or our favorite ones or right to party, as citizens of the U.S.A., we enjoy these things, and so we get festive in various ways.  Go for it.  Let's just not forget that our veterans went through a lot to defend these freedoms, including the right to party & be festive.  An author friend of mine, Soldwolf, is a Navy veteran who put in 22 years.

I don't always stand through the parade, but when floats like the Racine Navy Club or other Veteran groups come by, I abide by what I think is the proper action to stand as they go past.  I was thanked by the guy in front and felt connected.  It made me wonder if someday, Soldwolf will be a part of this club, and will he have the group read his story, Meeting the Parents?  Maybe - lol

Anyway, I am a natural American citizen but was born in Japan.  There, they celebrate Foundation Day, which happens to land on my very own birthday.  Because the country was never ruled by another entity, the celebrations and festivities are different.  It's more about being solid as a country and longevity.  Of course, there are parades, fireworks, and lots of food, just like here.  Just please, don't drink too much of that sake...

I decided to go take part in today's activities because this has taken on new meaning for myself.  I've never had a close relationship with either of my parents, as my father was estranged, and my mother is strained, to say the least.  I am in the process of packing up boxes to move into a house that will be all mine, and it's ironic that it was the inheritance from my estranged father that is helping to pay for the house I will be moving into...  What this means is, I will not be renting from the person with whom I have a stressed relationship with any longer.  The strains have taken an extensive toll, to which I will not divulge in a blog, but this move brings me several steps away to celebrate my own independence from those who can be considered toxic to me in more ways than this.

It is also helping to build my own foundation as well, literally AND figuratively.  While it will feel new, to cut out certain aspects of what drains me, it's still a lot of work.  After going to the parade, I went home, packed more boxes, and was glad to break again to go to a Low Country Boil for dinner, hosted by a dear friend who is kind of like a sister in certain ways.  It's kind of nice to be able to adopt & expand family, especially after having to shrink negative people out.

So, what is a Low Country Boil?  It is where various things get well seasoned boiled together in a humungous pot, and when done, dumped on a serving table.  I couldn't help but eat the corn on the cob.  While different people may use different things, this has 2 different types of mussels, shrimp, crab, sausage, potatoes, onions, and corn.  I've heard of these, but this was my 1st experience partaking, and I enjoyed it!  I even got to take leftovers home!

What is independence/foundation day w/o a good light & sound show?  But before we cut out, the next chapter of Soldwolf's story is Matters of House & Family (Ch 42) Huge decisions are being made, and while yes, it is directly regarding staff for the actual family, it's also tied into the fact that these are also military families with a lot of clout within the regime.  Ah, wouldn't it be nice if we could actually have our own staff?  But then again...  *sigh*  maybe I should be glad that isn't my problem.  Then to have to keep briefing everyone...  Stealth can be deadly, but it can also get a ton of intel.  Sh. Be very, very quiet...  Even though these are in a different direction, I relate personally, since I've had to make these types of decisions for matters concerning my house & family as well.

Please check his stuff out.  It's good reading.  Peace out.

Concert Settings:

Back in April, my 19-year-old son treated me to the Billy Joel concert up at Miller Park Stadium.  Yes, I corrupted him...  He loves classic rock.  Other concerts he has gone to include ZZ Top and The Who.  Definitely a boy after his mother's heart.  I am fortunate.

I wonder if it is because growing up myself, I'd always been a music head, and love classical music, jazz, etc.  I even play clarinet and tenor saxophone, sang in the jazz choir, and can't imagine my life w/o music.  My son also is a musician.  As a preschooler, he'd sneak my harmonica and play along to his favorite cartoon shows at the beginning.  He now plays trumpet and is learning how to play acoustic guitar.  Yes, I'm bragging just a little bit...

To make things more interesting, I'd been involved at a young age helping out with various campaigns to get people elected since I was about 9, and got him started around the same age, maybe slightly older.  We also love Science Fiction.  We try to see every sci-fi flick that comes out on the big screen together, even if it's on $5/Tuesdays or at the Value Cinema.  It's pretty fun.  Everything from Star Trek to X-Men to whatever else that comes out...  Plus we love action, thrillers, and so much more.  I hope we can continue to do things together as he goes on, though I realize it will be a lot less often.

So, when I found out that my friend, Soldwolf is writing a military sci-fi story filled with action, humor and even a little romance story called Meeting the Parents, I was interested.  Because I like the story so much, I decided that I just have to share it, because it's too good not to share.  It's a neat storyline featuring a hero from post-unification Earth, where he is serving in the UN military, and his love is from a prominent family on a planet called Tamal, a humanoid race that evolved from herbivores.  This Tamalnii heroine is such an endearing character, you'll be cheering on for her and her people as well as for her and her studly to make it through to the end.

Chapter 41:  Post TakedownsWith so much going on, people need to chill out to make out sensible reports...  Oh, the info collected is huge.  I'm just wondering what kind of smackdown is awaiting in the future...

Happy reading!  I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

People, Talents & Hey!

I met Soldwolf, the author of Meeting the Parents, a little over a year ago at one of the places I volunteer with.  He'd been regular there for a while, and very established in his role there, and has been very active with the day to day activities that happen.  The place is lucky to have him there, especially in the morning, and even the paid staff relies on him a lot.  With all that he gives of himself to the center to serve the neediest people in the community, he still takes a lot of guff from fellow staff & especially the clients.

Because the clientele is highly needy to an extent, coming in for a variety of reasons, there are those who are thankful to be there to help make their ends meet, then there are those who want to get anything and everything they can get their hands on.  My friend has no issues firmly telling people "no", and often, because he is firm with his principle, some people misinterpret him as being mean, rude, etc...

It is interesting, because as much flack as he takes, these people get forgiven, and he faithfully comes in ridiculously early to dedicate a part of his day to ensure that things are going smoothly.  Many people seem to overlook that.  Yet I think there are those who go in that makes it worthwhile for him to go in, such as the very talented resident artist who does an excellent job drawing & painting people/scenes there.  There are also a couple of musicians (a pianist and an aspiring fiddler), and I think I remember someone bringing in a knitting or crocheting project along that line.  Being that I'm pretty crafty myself, I understand why Soldwolf appreciates these people who help brighten the day, when others can be stressful.

In getting to know him, I find that he's smart, funny, and very accommodating.  When he puts his foot down, there is always a logical reason for it.  And, if people were to actually give him 10% of the slack he gives everybody else, they'd realize he's a good guy to know...  And, I really enjoy his military sci-fi story, which is still a work in progress (I've posted chapters in previous blogs), and because I think reading is a good thing, I'm sharing since you know, sharing the love is the right thing to do.

Chapter 39 - Fireworks
Now, who doesn't love a good fireworks show?  But who am I kidding?  Us Asian people love our light & sound shows.  It would be neat to learn how to become a pyrotechnic, and the hero's Japanese friend won't miss it, either.  I like how the author captured authentic cultural characteristics in the story.  It is also cute how certain things can sound really strange to someone from another planet when they don't have a basis for reference.  You're going to have to read about which sweet treat it is...

But of course, even during a celebratory fireworks show, not everything is fun and games.  The hero is in charge of some military operations, and of course, there are always things that need to be done, especially with personnel.  Other things are going on in the background.  Do heads roll?  Is there a death toll? You'll have to find out what kind of damage control is being done yourself.

Chapter 40 - Takedowns
Oh, and what a takedown...  I'd really hate to be in the position of this guy...  When a retired military officer comes out of retirement to see you, you know it isn't good!  And the intel that is being dug up, wow...  It's HUGE!

And with the Hero & his lovely (among those there to support them), being that they have pull within the military, still have to balance the work/life cycle delicately...  The tension & excitement grows, as to what will happen next.

The author's highlighted name at the top will bring you to his writing profile, and for those who want to read from the beginning, the title of the story will take you to chapter 1.  With more people stopping in to read, the better chance he gets of having publishers taking his story, once he's done, and actually printing it into a book.  With how he gives his time, also being a veteran, this would be a great way to be able to give back to him.

Father's Day Facts

In the USA, we take for granted that every year, we celebrate Mother's Day in May and Father's Day in June.  Not every country does this.  Certain countries expect that every day, you honor your parents in some form or another, especially when you still live at home.  In Japan, they celebrate Girls' Day on 3/3, Boys' Day on 5/5 - though it's starting to shift to having 1 Children's Day per year.

Here are the countries, other than the United States, which celebrate Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday of June every year:  Argentina, France, Netherlands, Chile, Canada, United Kingdom, India, and Japan.  Other countries do celebrate but on different days.

It is interesting though, how different cultures celebrate.  Breakfasts and brunches are somewhat popular around the world.  Going fishing or on other outings that the dads enjoy are also popular.  One that is underrated yet great, especially for dads who have everything, is to donate to a good cause in his honor would also be something cool.

Speaking of giving to dads, an author friend is a giving dad.  While I don't know how he pulls it off on occasion, but, evidently, his military background helps him keep a good regimen going.  He gets to the Hospitality Center before 0600 all 4 days in the morning and helps set up for breakfast to feed the people who come in, make the coffee for everyone, and all of the things that need to get set up to run smoothly.  Once that is in place, it's taking in and organizing all of the various donations which include food from multiple sources, among other donations for clothing and more come in, on top of getting called to make more coffee, get supplies for the main meal into the kitchen, and everything else...  These people are lucky to have him there helping.

Would you be a dear, and give this Navy dad of 3 grown daughters a read?  It would cool to be able to make Plans & Tours (Chapter 37) and treat our families, like in Soldwolf’s story, Meeting the Parents. Children can be handfuls. You either know how to handle 'em, or you don't, and they still crack me up to pieces. It's also interesting learning a little bit about Military etiquette. And, just like any place else, you have young ones who wander off, and adults who can't keep track of themselves, much less anyone else... Let's just hope the mischief is kept to a bare minimum!

4th of July is coming up in just a few weeks, where it’s like a Festival (Chapter 38) all by its self. Who doesn't love festivals? And a designated driver? But no, it isn't because of what you might think... It just would be nice once in a while. Of course, with every festive gathering, there are always gifts. Now I'll have to find what happened to MINE (you'll have to read the chapter to figure out what of mine I'm talking about) to show off & take pictures of... And it's so fun to introduce people to customs familiar to me but new to them, so I almost wish that I could be this type of gift bearer! The Lady is also Japanese, so I am relating with her as she gives her omiyage to people (okay, so I'm only half, and was a child in coming here, but...)

Just remember, every read he gets, gets him one step closer to being able to be found by publishers to turn this work in progress into a book. And what would YOU give to a Navy dad if you knew one, anyway? I don't know...

Advocacy & More

As the founder of Youth Voice Initiative, I get called upon often to do advocacy work, whether it's for a single parent who needs a letter written to the courts, or to speak up for a special needs child, or to help see what kinds of programs are available for various things whether it's a support group or just information in general.  It is truly rewarding to know that I can help make a difference for some people, including the lives of children.

Because of the experiences I've had, I'm also a volunteer advocate for Sexual Assault Services, and take the crisis phone to offer peer support as well as to make hospital visits for recent survivors.  It's not always easy work, but very worthwhile, because sometimes as the advocate, I might be the only one they see as being on their side.  One thing I enjoy doing, when there are small children present, whether the survivor is a child or the adult survivor brings their children in, is that I like to read age-appropriate books with them.  Reading often reduces stress and allows people to feel more normal.

In my own free time, I enjoy reading as well, and my favorite genre is Science Fiction, just because it's filled with action, technology, culture, and more.  It fascinates me.  The current story I'm reading is still a work in progress by a friend of mine, Soldwolf, called Meeting the Parents, which is a military sci-fi set in the future, where Earth is unified and has allies culturally and militarily with other humanoid type species intergalactically.  Please check previous blogs for more information, if you'd like.

Parties, Friends & Guests (Ch 33) We all like to eat. Sometimes it's nice to not have to cook, and it's even better when you have your special place with that special someone. The earth hero, Scott, even found a favorite spot on his lovely's planet that he even wants to show off to his family! But the question is, though, are the potential in-laws going to get along with each other? Or will it be a disaster? The dynamics can get interesting, so just read & find out for yourself. I just have to wonder though, where are MY Kyoto hair sticks?

Gathering Friends (Ch 34) It's fun to meet new people, especially when they're going to be important connections. While exciting and comforting, it can get overwhelming. I'm feeling the hero, who is anxious about remembering names, but fortunately, his lovely & her family are there for support. Even with his military friends, it's all about balancing work & life. I'm just wondering though, will they get to introduce Cajun cooking to these nice Tamalnii people? If this chapter doesn't tug at your heartstrings, I don't know what will.

Friends Reunited (Ch35) It's refreshing to find that even big tough guys can have a gentle soul, and how often, they could use a personal hero, too. heartwarming stuff, and when reuniting with friends, who are also formally connected, what better than hosting an official dance? And then of course, what is a dance w/o doing more party planning? So much fun stuff going for sure!

A Circle of Friends (Ch36) Everyone needs a good one of these, and I tell you, the hero and his lovely are lucky to have who they have. I'm really digging the new characters introduced, and how they get back to business on both work and personal fronts! Oh, and some huge things are brewing, so you don't want to miss out on the action!

Just where does my time go, seriously?

People who’ve known me for a long time know that I am a busy person, and even if I have some open time, it can fill up quickly. I’m always up to something, whether it’s working, spending time with my friends, or best yet - doing something adventurous with my son Chad. Regardless, you can always count on me being a “trouble maker” of sorts, where I like to believe that I’m working toward improving the quality of life for at least a small group of people, whether it be survivors of sex abuse or domestic violence, improving the quality/quantity of jobs for those seeking (better) employment, or whatever else may require me to be the advocate that I am. It’s just in this case, rather than being community activated to push a political or legal agenda, it’s actually giving me a lot of personal satisfaction in helping in my small little way in the name of humanity and making my corner of the world a little bit at the Hospitality Center. No, I do not work in the entertainment business. Nor do I work for a hotel/motel chain. This actually has less to do with the hospitality industry as it does touching the daily lives of those in the greatest need in my fair city within the Badger State called Racine, WI.

As the Mission Statement states in the Hospitality Center website, is: To provide hospitality without agenda to those in need or underserved in Racine - the homeless, near homeless and mentally ill. At a glance, it sounds nice. Simple enough. Yet it goes so far beyond that. This place literally welcomes everybody, offers a judgment-free zone, and offers so much more than just some meals.

While I’ve been familiar with the Hospitality Center since it’s inception, and have given little bits of whatever I had, it’s only been since mid May of 2018 until present where I’ve been here regularly and somehow became a part of the daily grind, and I’m surprised they actually LIKE me around here, if you actually believe it or not!

It is located inside of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the hours of the center are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays from 7:30 am -1 pm - some exceptions for holidays apply but inquire before assuming whether they will be open or not. Reverend Seth is the minister for the church as well as the Executive Director of the center, and Carl is the Program Manager for the Hospitality Center as well as having other important titles for other organizations.

These two guys seriously put in a lot of work for this place, and it’s really been a positive experience working with these two guys, who have grown on me in various ways. The regular staff & volunteers are pretty neat, too, and if you ever come in, please insist on getting some Navy coffee.

Of course, the staff (paid and volunteer) works hard to ensure that the meals are available for all. One super cool lady insists on offering a hot breakfast because it’s the most important meal of the day, and the clients who have the least are who she thinks most about when offering this service. But what’s breakfast w/o coffee? Yes, there is a bottomless pot, one is always brewing, and thank goodness for that, because if I’m a fiend for anything, it’s a good cup of java! One guy, in particular, has me spoiled. I make some good stuff, but his rates even better than my Godmother’s (just please do not tell her that). While the coffee is good the whole time, the hot breakfast is from 7:30-8:30, and fresh donuts, muffins and more are offered until 10.

There is always a nice, hot dinner served at 11:30 with a choice of beverages. It is always a healthy and well-balanced smorgasbord that you can brag to your doctor about. Most of the time, it is our staff & volunteers who prepare and serve the meal, but on occasion, we get some really awesome people in the community who come in, and they even cater the food, too! I’m sure the kitchen staff/volunteers are grateful when they get these types of breaks because normally they are going overtime with busting out their moves getting the good food out & serving cafeteria style. Fortunately for me, it does not make MY job any easier.

On Tuesdays & Fridays, there are AA meetings at 9 am. All are welcome. Approximately every 8 weeks on a Monday, there are free haircuts for those who need to update their hair, whether it’s to shave it in the summer or just to clean up the tips. Thursdays are when it seems everything else happens... Sign up for healthcare, dental check-ups, clothing banks, and today, Aurora healthcare was there doing women’s well checkups because it’s always good to take care of your breast health.

This is the 1st time I know of that they’re here, and it’s possible that Aurora may come back in the future with other health programs to cover other exams, so please stay tuned, you never know if the life it changes is yours, and in that event, it might be good to know that EVERY Thursday is clothing day, and there are lockers you can use temporarily utilize a locker while you stay and enjoy the company of others. I, for one, am thankful that the volunteers who keep the clothing bank straight are there because have a look, who wouldn’t want to “shop” for free here? They just ask that you only take what is needed, and if there is a shortage of clothing, there may be limits to what is able to be given out at any certain time. There is always a need for clothing of all sizes, especially undergarments, socks, women’s hygiene, personal hygiene, and more. The people who put this together definitely go above and beyond the call of duty.

Yes, it’s impressive at all of the services that are offered, but most importantly, it offers a place for people to connect, and for those who are in poverty, it helps people not get that sense of social disconnect. Seriously, this place is perfect for anyone who needs a place to go, something to do, and people to see. While for me, personally, yes, I can go anywhere and adapt to what it is, especially when it comes to talking in front of elected officials to talk about what needs to be done, the Hospitality Center goes beyond that. When I first arrived as an intern to do administrative work, I thought I was just going to be offering my professional services in the office and maybe offering some of my own hospitality to add to what was already there, which was easy. What I didn’t expect was to be given some of that back, and while it was awkward for me to try to accept it at the beginning, it actually kind of feels nice that this unlikely clientele would be part of the group giving the vibes back. I don’t ask for much, but I feel like I really do get more than I give (which isn’t much) and it’s huge.

I invite, actually dare you to come in and have a look around. And make sure you stay a bit, and not just once, either. Come in regularly, even if it’s once a month, and see what it transforms into for you. IF you’re lucky, I’ll share some of that good coffee with you, and we’ll talk a bit and take it from there.

In the spirit of keeping with good things going on at the Hospitality Center, my dear friend Soldwolf, the author of the Military Sci-Fi story called Meeting the Parents, also is a volunteer, who makes the awesome coffee. With the amount of work he puts in, Soldwolf is extremely valuable to the entire staff, paid and unpaid there. Sometimes he's misunderstood, but in reality, a good guy who is also funny, smart, and a great friend. He's there all 4 days but doesn't always stay for the whole time, so if you're especially lucky, you'll be able to meet the guy whose coffee won my heart over but do me a favor, don't let him know that I'll fight for that last cup... Sh! Just be a dear and read his next 4 chapters, will you? This retired Navy guy deserves your support in this endeavor to get his story published into a real book.

Chapter 29: Lunch & Phone Calls delves into some interesting info on ships designed for space, and how it can be difficult to juggle personal and professional business (especially when you have to clear intergalactic military clearances) with a business lunch and formal calls to family.

Chapter 30: Phone Calls & Introductions dang... It would be cool to have video calls to meet and get introduced to new people, and I like the international flair of having a multiethnic earth unit. The family affairs can get quite complicated and interesting, but is it time to start biting our nails or do they have it? It's business before pleasure for sure, especially in military life... The tension builds. How fast can these people work?

Chapter 31: Meetings & Arrivals It's interesting that in this day, we are still figuring out how to understand fellow Earthlings of different cultures, yet in the future, it's all about knowing how to fit in with the other humanoid species from other galaxies. The way it pans out often is hilarious, and hope that the snafus are at a minimum, and if not, at least workable. In the meantime, enjoy the humor in getting to learn & know the various cultural customs. And oh, the seduction! Wow. I think maybe a new vent system is in order, but then maybe it's the heat coming off of the active military personnel...

Chapter 32: Celebrations We all know that the bride-to-be's family is good for throwing the parties. It's even more fun when the groom-to-be's family does the same, and it's heartwarming to be able to see certain things. Just like earthlings, "alien" culture also revolves around the arts as well, which is refreshing to know. I wonder what Talmanii music sounds like? Hmm. I just know that sometimes it's interesting as to how we have to balance family & work business.
