Keeping the Holy Spirit alive.
I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma..
I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her. On the way,
my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered.
"Even dummies know that!"
My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because
I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew
that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her
"world-famous" cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma
said so. It had to be true.
Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything.
She was ready for me..
"No Santa Claus?" she snorted..."Ridiculous! Don't you believe it! That rumor has
been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!!
Now, put on your coat, and let's go."
"Go? Go where Grandma"I asked. I hadn't even finished my 2nd world famous cinnamon
cinnamon bun..
"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a
little bit of just about everything.
As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars.
That was a bundle in those days.
"Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who
needs it I'll wait for you in the car."
Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother,
but never had I shopped for anything all by myself.
The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish
their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to
buy, and who on earth to buy it for..
I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out at
recess during the cold weather.
His mother always wrote a note telling the teacher that he had a bad cough
but all us kids knew Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, he didn't have a good coat.
I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that.
"Is this a Christmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.
"Yes ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby." The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible)in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it..
Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."
I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.
Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes.
That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous.. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.
I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19..95.

Sears - A good message!
Saw this a few years ago (these are getting to be looooong wars!) so checked the facts again - still true.
Sears - Christmas shopping this year.
I know I needed this reminder, since Sears isn't always my first choice. It's amazing when you think of how long the war has lasted and Sears hasn't withdrawn from their commitment. Could we each buy at least one thing at Sears this year?
How does Sears treat its employees who are called up for military duty? By law, they are required to hold their jobs open and available, but nothing more. Usually, people take a big pay cut and lose benefits as a result of being called up for active duty.
Sears is voluntarily paying the difference in salaries and maintaining all benefits, including medical insurance and bonus programs, for all called up reservist employees for up to two years.
I submit that Sears is an exemplary corporate citizen and should be recognized for its contribution. I suggest we all shop at Sears at least once, and be sure to find a manager to tell them why we are there so the company gets the positive reinforcement & feedback it well deserves.

I decided to check this before I sent it forward. So I sent the following e-mail to the Sears Customer Service Department:
I received this e-mail and I would like to know if it is true. If it is, the internet may have just become one very good source of advertisement for your company. I know I would go out of my way to buy products from Sears instead of another store for a like item, even if it's cheaper at that store.
This is their answer to my e-mail:
Dear Customer:
Thank you for contacting Sears.The information is factual. We appreciate your positive feedback.

The Dog House
The Dog House - it's a cute video. Please view it, and stay out of the dog house this season.
Christmas time is coming up, and we all have feelings of warmth, friends, family, a quiet meal or a huge banquet, and even if it's a bit of work, we endure the extra little bit of stress because it's exciting. We enjoy what the season means, and we always are celebrating.
But just remember, too often, during the holiday season, people living in an abusive situation end up with escalated abuse, because the stress comes up that high. When this happens, the victims end up in the hospital, and rather than enjoy a family holiday, they endure a nightmarish ordeal. Abuse doesn't take off for a holiday. Please take a moment to sign the petitions, just to take one little step in helping to end the torture.
The first is to help stop child sex predators on and off line. There is a federal and a state version, please sign both. The next is one to help get equity of services for our abused men, because there is little there to nothing out there. The petition is named after a toddler who died at the hands of his mother. Final Day! Knock, knock! Action Needed!
This is the final day for the Male Abuse Awareness week for this year. Thank you to everyone who has been reading, signing the petition and passing it around. Action is still needed, so please keep signing and passing around this important petition.
I want to thank Grandma Elizabeth for sharing the story about baby Sean, who died at the hands of his mother, simply for being a boy. For more information, I'd like to direct everyone to YVI's website page dedicated to the Sean's Voice cause: http://www.youthvoiceinitiative.org/Sean_s_Voice.html
In this section, you will read about how the mother systematically abused her baby, along with the boy's father, whom would try repeatedly to escape with his children, yet would end up incarcerated because the mother would get hysterical and blame the father for the whole thing. It was the worst case of male abuse by a female, and because the police lacked training to understand the situation, and the myths involved that men can't be abused, she was believed, and who knows what happened when the father wasn't home to protect the child.
If, after reading the story, you're not compelled to sign the petition to ensure that our men get equal safety under the law, please sign the Sean's Voice petition to bring emergency shelter, support and services to our unacknowledged survivors of abuse, our men, who currently have little to nothing for them. long in helping and inspiring so many was also honored recently with a VOICE
Award. The VOICE awards
are given annually by SAMHSA [Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration] to honor movies, TV shows, and stars that portray mental
illness in a positive light. They also present six consumer advocate
awards. This year Gayle was one of them [and justly so], along with
a few others you may know; Laverne Miller, Janet Paleo, Moe Armstrong - who
received the Lifetime Achievement Award [way to go Moe!!], Fred Freese,
Clarence Jordan and Lorrin Gehring [for the youth award].
I am one of those who Gayle has helped to inspire in my own creative
advocacy endeavors; she has been a friend, a peer, mentor and so much more.

3rd Annual Male Abuse Awareness Week - December 1-8, 2010
The
P. Luna Foundation, a California 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization is proud to
present the
3rd Annual Male
Abuse Awareness Week Campaign, December 1st through 8th,
2010!
This
is an important awareness campaign to encourage young males who are victims and
survivors of abuse to seek help before they grow up to become the abusers.
We also provide men of all ages a huge list of help resources and
communities. This is how we can all help stop many cases
of child abuse, domestic violence, drug addiction
and suicide before they start.
Oprah
Winfrey
embraced this cause last month with a landmark double episode where 200 sexually
abused men came forward.
Of the 200 men that showed up, 80% had admitted to contemplating suicide because
they were not able to come out about their past abuse and seek help. The
taboo of this cause has to end!

euphemstically-named full-body "pat downs" taking
place in US airports as they effect CHILDREN.
We've put up numerous videos now of very young children
being stripped searched in public, touched against their
will, and, in any other place and under any other
circumstances, molested by TSA screeners.
Parents are counseled to tell their children that
these "screenings" are a game.
The US news media's comment on this?
Deafening silence.
Instead they ask us if we aren't being "too sensitive"
and tell us there needs to be a "balance between
security and privacy."
Children are being taught that anyone in uniform
has free access to their bodies...that they can't
say "no"...and that their parents are unable to protect
them.
In turn, parents are being taught that they
cannot protect their children.
The only word that comes to my mind to describe
this enterprise is "criminal."
Did not the TSA, Homeland Security, and the White
House (and the jackals in Congress that fund this
insanity) anticipate this as an outcome?
There are two possibilities here: either this is
official idiocy and arrogance of the highest order
or this outcome was anticipated and deemed acceptable.
I don't know the answer...but I do know that as a
governmenty agency that works closely with the CIA
and FBI, Homeland Security and the TSA have access
to hundreds of psychologists and psychiatrists,
in their employ, under contract, and available
at the drop of a dime.
I am not an expert in child abuse so I asked my
friend and colleague Kenneth Wooden for his comment.
Wooden is a former journalist and author of the
chilling and important book "The Children of Jonestown."
His experience covering the Jonestown story and seeing
the hundreds of children's coffins that came back from
Guyana motivated him to create a training company that
teaches children how to identify and protect themselves
from predators.
I asked him what he thinks of the TSA's policy of
commanding its employees to strip search and conduct
full body "pat downs" of small children.
I specifically asked him his opinion of the TSA
advising that young children be told that these officially
sanctioned intrusions of their bodies are a game.
Wooden's answer follows...

As a national child personal safety expert, I submit the TSA
crosses the line when it allows the patting down of children for
security reasons, cloaked as a game.
The most recent Gallup Poll on childhood abuse revealed that in just one
year, more than a million children were sexually and physically abused.
Along the same lines, the American Medical Association has referred to the
rape and sexual exploitation of women and children as a "violent and silent
epidemic." Men increasingly reveal how they were sexually assaulted in
their youth, by a rainbow of sexual predators, usually someone they knew.
Given that background - and the number of survivors that have been sexually
abused and exploited - it is beyond comprehension how the Homeland Security
Agency's TSA can conceive of such insensitive and invasive security checks
on our children and youth. Even worse, they want to depict pat downs of
children as a game! As an investigative researcher/reporter who has
interviewed well over a thousand sexual offenders, I can document that one
of the favorite ploys to lure children and youth into sexual abuse is to
disguise it as a "game."
How can experts working at the TSA be so incredibly misinformed and
misguided to suggest that full body pat downs for children be portrayed as a
game?!To do so is completely contrary to what we in the sexual abuse
prevention field have been trying to accomplish for the past thirty years.
Such policy could essentially desensitize children to inappropriate touch
and ultimately make it easier for sexual offenders to prey on our children.
This policy is also incredibly insensitive to the countless victims who have
already been traumatized by unwanted touching in their lives and could be
re-traumatized by such pat-downs.
In my judgment as a lifelong journalist and child advocate, such unapprised
actions by the TSA borders on criminal negligence and, legally speaking,
"deliberate indifference to the future emotional well being of millions of
victims and the potential for far too many more young victims."
