Blogophilia 17.18 – A Light in the Attic

Because of the lockout incident in late summer, we’re working on a new Marvin Martian Facebook PAGE, which may be independent of the Martien Ecrits Facebook account since we currently have limited access to the profile.

Hard Bonus: Include a line or phrase from “Beowulf”

Easy Bonus:
Mention a stairwell or stairs

Creepy Dolls in the Attic

In the shadowy mist that seems to transcend both from the sky and from the pond, shadows cast from the inside and does not dwell among the fallen autumn leave. The Leaves That Are Green rustle in the wind and it sounds like someone follows. We turn around and nobody’s there. As we look, A Light in the Attic peers out at us eerily in the dankness of the early evening. Gently enter the house and pass the squeaky stairs and gaze at the empty stairwell. We will fix it when the right time comes. “Fate will unwind as it must!” ― Burton Raffel, Beowulf

Blogophilia 16.18 – Rock of Ages

Our favorite Martian and his space dog, Martien Ecrits & Commander K appreciates all bloggers past present and future. Don’t be a Scrooge. In the words of C.C. from the Myspace days – lurking is creepy, to comment, divine!

Hard Bonus: Incorporate a lyric from the band Deep Purple

Easy Bonus:
Include a warrior

The shoreline rock formations have many hidden things, maybe even some Sweet Honey in the Rock, which is some serious Rock of Ages! Maybe it’s a peninsula or a fortified island that Xena, the Princess Warrior retreats to, when she’s done Chasing shadows, over my walls; With myself hardly sleeping; Dwarfs and giants, twenty feet tall; Fill the room with their creeping (Deep Purple, self titled album, 1969).

On a completely off topic tangent, I’m just sharing the UW-Parkside Wind Ensemble & Community Band October 8th concert livestream I think the music starts right around 6:40 (give or take). Mind, it’s much better in person, but, if you’re not in the area or are shut in, this is the next best thing. I’m just showing off my bandmates, because they’re awesome.

Blogophilia 15.18 – Across the Pond

Our favorite Martian, Martien Ecrits & his space dog Commander K work tirelessly each week to put Blogophilia together so we can write & read each other’s blogs. Thank you for bringing us together.

Hard Bonus: Include a renaissance fair

Easy Bonus:
Incorporate the name of a foreign city

Goose, Goose, Goslings!

I’d like to ponder what it means to be Across the Pond. Generally speaking, when people of US & Canada speak of it, we’re speaking of the United Kingdom. When Packer fans are speaking about it, yes, Detroit Lions fans, we’re talking about you! But I digress… “across the pond specifically means across the Atlantic Ocean, in which case, São Tomé and Príncipe is just as equally. Maybe I’m just trying to discover “new” music to me.

The Renaissance began in Florence and spread throughout Italy before moving out toward western & northern Europe. It seems as if most American fall fairs like the Bristol Renaissance Faire celebrate English/Great Britain style, and happens late summer, ending Labor Day weekend. Going south of the border (for you non-Midwesterners, that’s Illinois/Chicago Bears land) has Medieval Times, another fun Renaissance tribute that has dinner & a show – right down to time characters. And did you know, Italy doesn’t have these celebrations? Huh… For tribute, some Venetian Ren music.

Parkside Wind Ensemble & Community Band

October 8, 2026

7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Francis Bedford Concert Hall

Join us for a special evening of music on Thursday, October 8, at 7:00 p.m. in Bedford Concert Hall, featuring the UW-Parkside Community Band and the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by acclaimed Australian composer Jodie Blackshaw.

The premiere performance of Cirrus, the Sky Dancer was commissioned by a member of the Community Band and represents a unique collaboration between composer and ensemble. Blackshaw will work with the band throughout the rehearsal process via Zoom, offering musicians a rare opportunity to engage directly with the composer in bringing this new work to life.

Leading up to the concert, Blackshaw, Director of Bands Dr. Laura Rexroth, and the commissioner of the work will be featured on The Morning Show with Greg Berg to discuss the project and the excitement surrounding the premiere.

The concert program also celebrates outstanding contributions by women composers and includes:

  • One Life Beautiful by Julie Giroux, a moving and inspiring work of exceptional beauty
  • Dances for the Muse, Terpsichore by Carol Brittin Chambers, a colorful multi-movement composition inspired by Renaissance dance traditions
  • Ecstatic Fanfare by Steven Bryant, an energetic and exhilarating opening work

This memorable evening promises powerful music, artistic innovation, and a historic premiere that alumni and community members alike will enjoy.
